A little big tale…. The other side of the story
Every so often, we don’t want to see beyond our own misery, we go blind, drift away and finally, we leave behind those things that should give us, at least, a little joy.
This is nothing but a real story; one that you may not recognize as yours, for it’s the one which lies on the other side of the mirror.
Once upon the time, there was a woman with no more than a bouquet of sadness, hardly any smiles and almost no dreams. She didn’t have anything else to lose, nothing to wait for, though nobody really knew it.
And the miracle occurred, one of the wonders which tend to be taken as something common if they are not seen in depth. A prince, from a far-away kingdom, materialized before her eyes, offering his hand and yielding his heart.
The woman could barely believe it, her heart was trembling again, and she felt alive one more time. She fell in love for ever……
As the days were going by, the prince and the woman lived their love against all odds, dreaming together, planning a future, loving each other and speaking with love.
OH! If you could only know how pleased that woman was every time she saw his face or listened to his voice. Seldom has existed such a huge love, the love she felt….but the time went by and she could not stop it….and the time went by……
First, he stopped showing her his face, and she resigned to look once and again at some stolen photographies, as if she wanted to keep his image unbroken in her mind, that image that had brought so much happiness once. Afterwards, he lost his strength and he heard voices from people other than the woman, and the other’s fears fed his own fears and finally he preferred to stay in his kingdom, safe and sound, but intensely alone.
She cried silent tears but continued loving him and keeping her hope alive, “If God allowed me to meet him, he might have some good reason, he must know why he did it”, she used to think. And she loved him even more, so much she loved him, that she convinced herself that her love was enough for both of them….. but it’s never enough, is it?
That prince that once had covered her with sweetness, that had looked after her dreams, that had melted her with her words, became distant and soon he got used to not saying “I love you”, she was supposed to know it, but she needed to hear those words so much… Distance frightens and turns people vulnerable, she wasn’t the exception.
Day after day the prince became even more lonesome and instead of going after her and fighting for that love, he began to drift apart from her. His words changed, he forgot to say some others and he became numb.
There are some people who claim he is full of fears and prefer to forget about her. She, on the other hand, feels too much sorrow and emptiness and wipes her tears when he calls to protect him from carrying her load. It is said that when a woman comes to life by holding a prince’s hand, it takes too little to kill her soul if that love vanishes. But he doesn’t know, because he is immersed in his own routine, his willingness. The prince lost his sword…… or he just doesn’t want to use it.
This story, which is not a fairy tale, it’s the true story of two human beings that love each other. In the village, some people say she is still waiting for the second miracle, and that she hopes and dreams to be with him with the same strength of the first day, but she plunges in her own tears.
The prince is bored stiff, he has no dreams to clutch to, he has become selfish and he spends his time lamenting about his life. He only listens to his own words. Any way, it is said nobody can change his mind, not even that woman no matter how much she tries. No love is enough.
Wise men say it’s only her fault for she keeps from him she’s dying of sorrow, they may be right. She should tell him what she thinks, but she continues smiling time after time.
In the end, I will have to believe that stories are just that, simple tales. No prince leaves the castle for a plebeian. Nonetheless, my inner child resists accepting that and I will believe in that kind of love until the prince finally gives her the last stab.
